The Best Squalane Oil for Oily Skin

Ranked on dose, not on cost per ounce. Oily skin uses one or two drops where dry skin uses four — which means the small bottle is the right buy and the big-value bottle is the wrong one.

The pick is The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane, and the reason is the bottle rather than the oil. Every 100% squalane is the same molecule, so for oily skin the question is not which one works — it is how much you are going to use and how long a bottle will therefore last. Oily skin wants one or two drops; dry skin wants four. At that dose a 30 ml bottle covers most of a year of daily use, which makes The Ordinary's small, cheap, single-ingredient bottle the right shape for this skin type and makes the big-value bottle the wrong one, even though it is better per ounce.

That is the opposite of the advice on our main oils page, deliberately. Cost per ounce is the correct way to rank squalane for someone who uses a lot of it — on a body, on hair, on a gua sha routine. It is the wrong way to rank it for someone who is going to apply two drops a night, because the cheapest ounce in the world is still bad value if a third of the bottle is still sitting there eighteen months later. We would rather say that than sell you a bigger bottle.

The second thing that matters for oily skin is what else is in the bottle. Squalane itself is commonly rated 0–1 for comedogenicity and contains no fatty acids at all, which is exactly why it is the one facial oil oily and acne-prone skin can use. That property belongs to squalane, not to products with squalane in them — a blend carrying coconut-derived esters, plant butters or a fragrance has a different risk profile, and the single-ingredient bottles are the only ones where what you read on the front is the whole formula. So three of the four picks below have one thing on the ingredient list, and the fourth is a rinse-off cleanser for people who do not want to add a leave-on oil at all.

How we picked: we don't run a lab and we don't claim to. We read every ingredient list, compiled the published specs, and computed the cost per ounce below. See our full method.

Skip it if you prefer buying a smaller bottle to keep an oil fresh, or want a recognizable label.

Bottom line: buy The Ordinary if you want a leave-on squalane and a sensible bottle size. Buy Good Molecules if you want to find out whether an oil suits your oily skin before committing to anything — it is the smallest bottle sold by a name brand, which makes it the cheapest possible trial, and it is honestly poor value per ounce if you end up loving it. Buy the CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser if the idea of adding oil to an already-shiny face is the part you cannot get past: it dissolves oil and sunscreen and then rinses away, so you get squalane's softening effect in a step that leaves nothing behind. Buy Timeless only if you also use squalane on your body, hair or a massage tool — on a two-drop face habit it is more oil than you will get through.

Whichever you pick, the application detail matters more on oily skin than the product does. Two drops, pressed into skin that is still slightly damp, at night rather than under morning sunscreen if shine is your complaint. Squalane attracts no water of its own, so damp skin is what gives it something to hold; and an oil applied to a dry face is where the greasy feeling that puts oily skin off oils actually comes from.

Frequently asked questions

Is squalane oil good for oily skin?

Yes, and it is the facial oil most often recommended for it. Squalane is commonly rated 0 to 1 on the comedogenic scale, contains no fatty acids, and is considered fungal-acne safe, so it does not carry the pore-clogging risk of heavier plant oils. The catch is dose: oily skin needs one or two drops, and most complaints about squalane feeling greasy come from applying four.

What is the best squalane oil for oily skin?

The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane, for the bottle as much as the oil. It is a single-ingredient, sugarcane-derived squalane in a 30 ml bottle, which at an oily-skin dose of one to two drops a night is close to a year of use. A bigger bottle is better value per ounce but worse value in practice if you will not finish it.

Will squalane make my oily skin oilier?

It will not add to your sebum production, and it is unusually light for a lipid, but a face that is already shiny will look shinier if you over-apply. The fix is dose and timing rather than a different product: one or two drops, pressed into damp skin, at night. If shine during the day is the problem, use it only in the evening.

Should oily skin buy the big bottle for better value?

Usually not, and this is the one place our advice differs from our main oils page. Cost per ounce is the right measure if you use squalane generously, on your body or your hair. If you are applying two drops to your face once a day, a 30 ml bottle lasts most of a year and a 60 ml bottle lasts most of two, by which point you would rather have bought a fresh one.

Is a squalane cleanser better than a squalane oil for oily skin?

It is a different job, and for some people a better fit. A cleanser rinses away, so you get the softening effect during the wash without leaving a leave-on layer on an already-oily face. An oil stays on and does the water-loss job properly. Plenty of oily-skinned people use the cleanser daily and the oil only at night, or only in winter.

Does squalane clog pores?

Squalane itself is commonly rated 0 to 1, which is the friendly end of the scale, and that rating is the main reason it is recommended for oily and acne-prone skin. What can clog pores is other things in a product that contains squalane - richer esters, butters, or an oil high on the comedogenic scale - which is why the single-ingredient bottles are the safest choice here.

When should oily skin apply squalane?

At night, after any water-based serum, on skin that is still slightly damp. Squalane has no humectant action and attracts no water, so damp skin is what gives it something to seal in. Morning use is fine too, but if you are shine-prone or wear makeup, the evening is the easier place for it.
