Squalane FAQ
The questions we get asked most, answered plainly and cited where it counts.
Squalane, answered
What is squalane?
Squalane is a lightweight, shelf-stable moisturizing oil, usually derived today from sugarcane or olives. It hydrates and supports the skin barrier without heaviness, and is rated 0–1 on the comedogenic scale, so it suits most skin types.
Is squalane the same as squalene?
No. Squalene (with an 'e') is a natural lipid your skin produces but which oxidizes quickly. Squalane (with an 'a') is the hydrogenated, shelf-stable version used in skincare. They're closely related but not identical.
Is squalane comedogenic?
It's considered non-comedogenic, commonly rated 0–1 on the 0–5 scale, meaning it's very unlikely to clog pores. That's why it's one of the few facial oils suited to acne-prone skin.
Does squalane clog pores?
Very unlikely. Its low comedogenic rating means pure squalane rarely causes congestion. If a squalane product breaks you out, another ingredient in a blend — often fragrance — is the more likely cause.
Is squalane good for acne-prone skin?
Yes. It's non-comedogenic, fragrance-free in its pure form, and considered fungal-acne safe, which makes it one of the safest facial oils for acne-prone skin. It won't treat acne, but it hydrates without adding clogging risk.
Is squalane fungal-acne safe?
Yes. The Malassezia yeast associated with fungal acne can't feed on saturated hydrocarbons like squalane, so pure squalane is widely considered fungal-acne safe.
How do you use squalane oil?
Apply a few drops near the end of your routine — after water-based serums and before or mixed into moisturizer. In the morning, use it before sunscreen. Pressing it into slightly damp skin boosts hydration.
Do you use squalane before or after moisturizer?
Before, or mixed into it. Squalane is light enough to go under a cream, or you can add a drop or two directly to your moisturizer. A heavier cream can also go over squalane to seal everything in.
Can you use squalane every day?
Yes. It's well tolerated and non-comedogenic, so most people use it morning and night. Apply it before sunscreen in the morning.
Is squalane safe during pregnancy?
Squalane is generally regarded as safe and is a gentle, fragrance-free option, but as with any product during pregnancy it's sensible to check with your doctor. We can't give personal medical advice.
Where does squalane come from?
Historically from shark liver, but today the vast majority is plant-derived — most commonly from fermented sugarcane or olives, and also rice bran and amaranth. Look for a stated plant source on the pack.
Is squalane vegan?
Modern cosmetic squalane is usually plant-derived (sugarcane or olive) and vegan. Because it was historically shark-derived, check that a product states a plant source if that matters to you.
Is squalane good for dry skin?
Yes. It's an emollient that softens the skin and helps seal in water, reducing the moisture loss that leaves dry skin tight and flaky, without feeling heavy. Layer it over a hyaluronic acid serum for best results.
Is squalane good for hair?
Yes. A drop or two smooths the cuticle, tames frizz, and adds shine to dry ends while staying lightweight. Use it sparingly, especially on fine hair.
Can you use squalane with retinol?
Yes. Applying squalane over a retinoid can reduce dryness and irritation, making the retinoid easier to tolerate, without interfering with how it works.
Can you use squalane and hyaluronic acid together?
Yes, and they pair well. Apply hyaluronic acid first on damp skin, then squalane on top to seal the water in. The humectant draws water in; the oil keeps it there.
Does squalane expire?
Squalane is unusually stable because it's saturated, so it resists oxidation. Shelf life is typically cited at around 36 months unopened and about 12 months once opened. Keep it capped and out of direct light.
Is expensive squalane better than cheap squalane?
Not necessarily. A 100% squalane is the same molecule whatever the price, so a pricier bottle usually buys brand, packaging, or size rather than a better ingredient. We flag when the budget option is the smarter buy.
