The Best Moisturizer with Squalane and Ceramides

Ranked on the ceramide rather than the squalane — how many, which kind, and how far down the ingredient list it actually sits. Most jars that say ceramide on the front have one, near the bottom.

The pick is the Paula's Choice RESIST Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer, and it is the pick by a wide margin: it is the only product we cover that is a face cream carrying five named ceramides plus cholesterol, with squalane sixth of thirty-five and no fragrance anywhere on the published list. If you want this combination for your body rather than your face, the Pyunkang Yul Intensive Ceramide Body Lotion is second and is also fragrance-free. If what you actually want is the most squalane in a cream and you can live with the ceramide being almost decorative, the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream is fourth and we explain exactly why it is fourth.

Before the list, the finding that makes this page worth publishing. We screened the whole registry for products containing both squalane and a declared ceramide, and the result is uncomfortable for the category: four qualify, and only one of them has a ceramide complex rather than a single ceramide-adjacent ingredient sitting a long way down a long list. That is not a Squalane Club discovery about these four brands; it is what the word ceramide usually means on a moisturiser. It is a marketing-bearing ingredient, and marketing-bearing ingredients are frequently added at the smallest concentration that lets the claim be printed.

So here is the criterion, and it is the ceramide, not the squalane. First, how many: a complex of several ceramide types is doing something different from one. Second, which kind: a true ceramide such as ceramide NP, ceramide AP or ceramide EOP is not the same as an analogue like hydroxypropyl bispalmitamide MEA, which behaves similarly but is a different molecule, nor the same as a brand coinage like pro-ceramide. Third, and most revealing, where it sits: an ingredient listed after the preservative is present in a smaller amount than the preservative, and INCI ordering is mandatory down to 1% so that inference is sound rather than a guess. We give the position for every pick on its card.

Why the combination is worth wanting in the first place. The outer layer of skin holds itself together with a mortar of lipids in roughly balanced proportions: around half ceramides, with cholesterol and free fatty acids making up most of the rest. When that mortar is depleted — by age, by winter, by over-washing, by eczema, by a retinoid you started too fast — skin loses water faster and gets rough, tight and reactive. Ceramides and cholesterol are attempts to put the missing material back. Squalane is a different job entirely: it is an emollient that sits on the surface, softens it, and slows the water leaving. Together they are a sensible pair, which is why the pairing is worth searching for. The error is assuming any jar printing both words contains meaningful amounts of both.

What the ranking therefore looks like. The Paula's Choice formula leads despite squalane sitting sixth, behind two esters and glycerin, because it is the only one here whose ceramide content is a complex: five ceramides plus cholesterol, in a fragrance-free base. Second is a body lotion rather than a face cream, which is an honest reflection of what exists: it is fragrance-free, it declares its ceramide analogue at 1,000 ppm, and it is the biggest bottle we cover. Third is an eye product with squalane fifth and ceramide NP behind it — a good position on paper, undermined by five declared fragrance allergens on the thinnest skin on your body. Fourth is the famous cream with the most squalane and the least convincing ceramide.

The product most people should buy is not on this list, and we would rather say so. If your interest in squalane plus ceramides is practical rather than specific, the CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser pairs squalane with three real ceramides at a low price and is sold everywhere. It is a cleanser, so it is not on a moisturiser page — and the obvious objection applies, that a wash rinses off and the ceramides go down the drain with it. But as a way to spend very little and get both ingredients into a routine it is the most accessible option on this site, and the matching move is a plain squalane oil pressed onto damp skin afterwards.

A note on cost per ounce, which is switched off on this page. Comparing the per-ounce price of a 25 ml eye pot, a 50 ml face cream and a 500 ml body lotion is not a fair fight — the eye pot looks outrageous and the lotion looks like a miracle, and neither comparison helps you choose. Each product card below still carries its own cost per ounce from the live price, with an as-of date, so you can see what you are paying for the thing you are actually in the market for. Prices move; the ingredient lists do not.

How we picked: we don't run a lab and we don't claim to. We read every ingredient list, compiled the published specs, and computed the cost per ounce below. See our full method.

Best squalane moisturizer

What we like

  • Squalane 6th of 35 — ahead of the shea butter and all five ceramides
  • Five ceramides (NP, AP, AS, NS, EOP) plus cholesterol, which is what barrier repair actually looks like
  • Fragrance-free and essential-oil-free on the published INCI
  • Sodium hyaluronate, urea and sodium PCA add humectants behind the emollients

Keep in mind

  • A 1.7 fl oz jar at a premium price, so the cost per ounce is high for a daily cream
  • Squalane is one of a dozen actives here — it is not the point of the formula the way it is in a plain oil
  • The brand's 100-hour hydration and 30-minute barrier claims are its own clinical testing, not independent
  • Cushioned enough that oily skin will likely prefer a plain squalane oil

Skip it if your skin is oily, or if you want single-ingredient squalane — a 100% squalane oil costs a fraction per ounce and is the same molecule.

Best big bottle

What we like

  • 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) — the largest bottle of the four here
  • Fragrance-free: no parfum and no declared fragrance allergens on the list
  • A ceramide analogue declared at 1,000 ppm, alongside five forms of hyaluronic acid
  • Sunflower, macadamia and olive oils with shea butter carry the emollient load

Keep in mind

  • Squalane sits 21st of 36 — a minor emollient here, not the base of the formula
  • The 'ceramide' is hydroxypropyl bispalmitamide MEA, an analogue, declared at 1,000 ppm (0.1%)
  • Ethylhexyl palmitate is fourth on the list, and comedogenicity charts rate it poorly for breakout-prone skin
  • A bigger bottle, but not automatically the cheapest per ounce — check the live table

Skip it if you want squalane high on the ingredient list — here it is one emollient among many, well down a long one.

belif Moisturizing Eye Bomb with Peptide and Ceramide
#3 · Biggest jar

belif Moisturizing Eye Bomb with Peptide and Ceramide

6.8

The largest pot here by a distance and a cult favorite, with squalane 5th — but it is the only pick carrying fragrance components, which is the one thing eye-area skin least wants.

Biggest jar and richest texture

What we like

  • Squalane 5th, ahead of the ceramide and the peptides
  • 0.84 fl oz — two-thirds more product than the 15 ml jars
  • Ceramide NP, bakuchiol and caffeine in one pot
  • Middle of the pack on cost per ounce despite the premium positioning

Keep in mind

  • Declares limonene, citronellol, geraniol, citral and linalool — fragrance allergens, on the thinnest skin on your body
  • Seventy-plus ingredients, which is the opposite of what irritable eye-area skin wants
  • Silicone-heavy, so it can pill under makeup
  • The brand does not say where its squalane comes from

Skip it if your eyes are at all reactive, if you have a known fragrance allergy, or if you want the simplest possible formula — which, around the eyes, most people should.

Best for
A light everyday cream with squalane high on the list

What we like

  • Squalane 4th of 35 at a declared 4.5% — the highest position in any face cream we cover
  • States its squalane percentage outright, so you don't have to infer it from list position
  • No fragrance, parfum or essential oil on the published list; National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance
  • Sold by Kiehl's own Amazon storefront, which also lists a larger size that costs less per ounce

Keep in mind

  • Dimethicone sits 3rd, so there is at least as much silicone as squalane in the jar
  • The glacial glycoprotein and pro-ceramide on the label sit 29th and 31st, after the preservative
  • Myristyl myristate plus seven plant oils make it a patch-test product for acne-prone skin
  • SkinSAFE rates it 91 and withholds its fragrance-free badge without naming the ingredient it flagged
  • The 72-hour hydration and 1-hour barrier claims come from the brand's own instrumental studies

Skip it if your skin breaks out easily, if you want a genuinely ceramide-rich barrier cream, or if you only want squalane — a 100% squalane oil gives you far more of it per dollar.

Buy the Paula's Choice RESIST Barrier Repair Advanced if you want the real thing. Five named ceramides plus cholesterol is what barrier repair looks like on an ingredient list rather than on a box, squalane is sixth of thirty-five, and there is no fragrance anywhere on the published list. It is the pick for skin that feels tight by late afternoon, flakes in winter, or has been roughed up by a retinoid introduced too quickly. The honest caveats: it is a premium price for 1.7 fl oz, squalane is a supporting emollient here rather than the headline, and the texture is a cushioned cream, so if you like a bare, weightless finish you will not enjoy it.

Buy the Pyunkang Yul Intensive Ceramide Body Lotion for everything below the neck. 16.9 fl oz, fragrance-free, five forms of hyaluronic acid, and a ceramide analogue declared outright at 1,000 ppm — which is 0.1%, a small number the brand deserves credit for publishing when most do not publish anything. Read the card before you buy: squalane sits twenty-first of thirty-six, so this is a ceramide-and-hyaluronic lotion that also contains squalane, and ethylhexyl palmitate is fourth, which is an ester comedogenicity charts rate poorly, so go lighter on a back or chest that breaks out.

The belif Eye Bomb is the one we have the most reservations about, and it is on the page because the ingredient positions are genuinely good: squalane fifth, with ceramide NP, bakuchiol and caffeine behind it, in the largest eye pot we cover. Then you read the rest of the list, which runs past seventy ingredients and declares limonene, citronellol, geraniol, citral and linalool — fragrance allergens, on the thinnest and most reactive skin on your body. If your eyes are at all sensitive, do not buy this; our eye-cream roundup has a fragrance-free alternative. If they are not, it is a rich, well-positioned formula and a cult product for a reason.

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream is fourth, and the reason is instructive. On squalane it is the best cream we cover: fourth of thirty-five at a declared 4.5%, with no fragrance on the published list and a National Eczema Association Seal, and stating a percentage outright is better practice than making you infer it. On ceramides it is the weakest here by a distance: the pro-ceramide, hydroxypalmitoyl sphinganine, sits thirty-first of thirty-five — after phenoxyethanol, a preservative the EU caps at 1%. So it is a light, pleasant, fragrance-free cream with a real squalane content and a ceramide story that the ingredient list does not support. Buy it for the squalane; do not buy it for the barrier complex.

How to use the combination, because order matters more than people expect. Ceramides and cholesterol are in the cream, so the cream goes on skin that is still slightly damp from cleansing — that is when a moisturiser has water to hold rather than skin to wet. Water-based serums go underneath it, sunscreen goes on top in the morning and is never mixed with anything. If you also own a plain squalane oil, the useful move is to press a drop or two over the cream on nights when skin is especially dry, rather than under it, because the oil is the sealing layer and sealing is the last job. Our layering guide has the full order.

The bottom line. Buy the Paula's Choice RESIST Barrier Repair Advanced if you want a face cream with an actual ceramide complex behind its squalane, fragrance-free, and you accept the price. Buy the Pyunkang Yul lotion for the body, where the volume makes it the sensible purchase. Consider the belif Eye Bomb only if you have no fragrance sensitivity at all. Buy the Kiehl's for its squalane and ignore the ceramide claim. And if you want this combination for the least money, the CeraVe foaming oil cleanser plus a plain squalane oil gets you both ingredients for a fraction of any of them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best moisturizer with squalane and ceramides?

The Paula's Choice RESIST Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer. It is the only face cream we cover carrying a genuine ceramide complex — five named ceramides plus cholesterol — with squalane sixth of thirty-five and no fragrance on the published list. Most products that print ceramide on the front contain one ceramide or a ceramide analogue, well down a long ingredient list, often after the preservative.

Should squalane and ceramides be in the same product?

They can be, and it is convenient, but there is no chemistry that requires it. Ceramides work by replacing lipids the skin's outer layer is short of; squalane works by softening the surface and slowing water loss. Buying them separately — a ceramide cream and a plain squalane oil — often gets you more of both for less money, and lets you use the oil on nights when skin needs an extra sealing layer.

How can I tell if a cream has enough ceramide to matter?

Read the position on the INCI list. Ingredient order is mandatory down to 1%, so anything listed after the preservative is present in a smaller amount than the preservative. Also check what the ceramide actually is: ceramide NP, AP or EOP are real ceramides, hydroxypropyl bispalmitamide MEA is an analogue, and terms like pro-ceramide are brand coinages. We give the position and the type on every card here.

Is squalane a ceramide?

No. Squalane is a saturated hydrocarbon — an emollient that sits on the surface, softens it and slows water escaping. Ceramides are a family of lipids that make up roughly half the mortar holding your outer skin layer together, and a ceramide product is attempting to replace material that is missing. They are complementary jobs, not interchangeable ones, which is covered in full on our squalane versus ceramides page.

Is there a cheap squalane and ceramide product?

The CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser pairs squalane with three real ceramides at a drugstore price and is stocked everywhere. The obvious limitation is that it is a cleanser, so most of it rinses away. For a low-cost leave-on version of the same idea, a fragrance-free ceramide moisturiser plus a plain squalane oil pressed on top costs less than any single premium jar.

Which is more important for a damaged barrier, squalane or ceramides?

Ceramides, if you have to choose. A depleted barrier is short of specific lipids, and ceramides plus cholesterol are an attempt to put those back; squalane is an emollient that makes the surface feel and look better and reduces water loss, which helps but does not replace the missing material. The practical answer is both, with the ceramide product as the cream and the squalane as the sealing layer over it.
