The Best Squalane Body Lotions
Squalane is on the front of a lot of body bottles now. We ranked these by where it actually sits on the ingredient list — which is a very different order.

Squalane has migrated out of the face aisle. Walk the body-care shelf now and you will find it printed on lotions, creams, butters and body serums, usually in the same large type as the brand name. That is a genuinely good development, because squalane does the same job on a shin that it does on a cheek: it is a lightweight, non-greasy emollient that softens the surface and slows the water your skin loses to the air.
But a body lotion is an emulsion, not an oil. Where a 100% squalane oil is one ingredient and nothing else, a lotion is water plus twenty to forty other things, and squalane is only one of them. That raises the question the front of the bottle never answers: is the squalane actually doing the work, or is it a garnish sitting near the bottom of the list to justify the name?
There is a reliable way to check. US labeling rules require ingredients present above 1% to be declared in descending order of predominance — most first, least last. Below 1%, brands may list ingredients in any order they like. So squalane at position two means the formula is genuinely built on it. Squalane at position thirty, trailing the preservatives, means there is almost certainly a trace of it in there and the marketing department found out. Reading that order is the single most useful thing you can do in this category, and it takes about ten seconds.
So that is how we ranked this page. First by where squalane really appears on each brand's published ingredient list; then by cost per ounce, computed below from the current price and the listed size, because body use burns through product several times faster than face use; then by whether the formula is fragranced, since a lotion you apply over your whole body is the worst place to discover you react to a fragrance allergen; and finally by skin-type fit, because backs and chests break out in a way shins do not.
Four products cleared that bar and are in stock as we publish. One of them puts squalane second on the list. The other three do not, and we say so plainly on each card — including for the pick most people should probably buy. Further down we have also listed the well-known squalane-branded body products we deliberately left out, and why, because in this category the rejections are as useful as the picks.
How we picked:we don't run a lab and we don't claim to. We read every ingredient list, compiled the published specs, and computed the cost per ounce below. See our full method.

Naturium The Glow Getter Multi-Oil Body Butter
7.4The richest formula here — a genuine oil-and-shea body butter — but squalane is far down the list and it is noticeably scented.
- Purity
- Squalane sits low on a long botanical-oil list

What we like
- Oil-forward: rice bran, coconut, safflower, jojoba and rosehip plus shea butter
- Also contains C15-19 alkane, the lighter spreading cousin of squalane
- A butter rather than a lotion, for skin a thin lotion doesn't satisfy
Keep in mind
- Squalane is well down the ingredient list — a botanical butter with squalane in it, not a squalane butter
- Scented, with limonene declared — not for the fragrance-averse
- Too rich for oily or body-acne-prone skin
Skip it if you want fragrance-free, or if squalane specifically is the ingredient you are shopping for.

Pyunkang Yul Intensive Ceramide Body Lotion

- 16.9 fl oz (500 ml)

- $1.30/oz
- Best for
- Best big bottle
What we like

- Fragrance-free: no parfum and no declared fragrance allergens on the list
- A ceramide analogue declared at 1,000 ppm, alongside five forms of hyaluronic acid
- Sunflower, macadamia and olive oils with shea butter carry the emollient load
Keep in mind
- Squalane sits 21st of 36 — a minor emollient here, not the base of the formula
- The 'ceramide' is hydroxypropyl bispalmitamide MEA, an analogue, declared at 1,000 ppm (0.1%)
- Ethylhexyl palmitate is fourth on the list, and comedogenicity charts rate it poorly for breakout-prone skin
- A bigger bottle, but not automatically the cheapest per ounce — check the live table

What we left out, and why. Pilgrim's Spanish Squalane & Niacinamide Glow Body Lotion is the clearest example of the problem this page exists to solve: squalane is the very last ingredient on its published list, behind the preservatives and the pH adjusters, despite being half the product name. Aluram's Golden Glow Body Lotion contains dihydroxyacetone, the active in gradual self-tanners — a perfectly good product if you want color, but not what most people mean by a body moisturizer, and a genuinely unpleasant surprise if you buy it by accident. Sol de Janeiro's Beija Flor Elasti-Cream does contain squalane, but mid-list and behind the fragrance, and the listing we found on Amazon was a 2.5 fl oz travel size, which is an expensive way to buy a body cream. Kiehl's Ultra Body Mega Moisture Squalane cream looked promising on paper and was showing as unavailable when we checked, so we are not sending you to a dead listing.
The cheapest squalane body routine is the one you build yourself. If what you actually want is squalane on your skin — rather than a specific lotion — the most efficient route is a bottle of 100% squalane oil layered over a plain, cheap, fragrance-free body lotion. You get to decide how much squalane goes on, you are not paying a premium for a formula that contains a trace of it, and a large bottle of pure squalane costs less than most of the lotions on this page. Apply the lotion first while skin is still damp, then a few drops of squalane over the top to seal it. Our body-oil guide covers that approach in full, and our main oils roundup has the large-format bottles that make it affordable.
How to use a squalane body lotion. Apply it to skin that is still slightly damp, within a few minutes of getting out of the shower — that is standard dermatology advice for dry skin, and it matters more than which lotion you choose. Concentrate on the places that actually get dry: shins, elbows, knees, forearms and the sides of the torso. Go lighter, or skip entirely, on a back or chest that breaks out, especially with the richer butter formulas. And if your skin is dry enough that a daily lotion is not holding it, that is worth raising with a doctor rather than escalating through more expensive creams.
Body lotion or plain squalane oil? A lotion contains water and humectants such as glycerin, panthenol or sodium PCA, which pull moisture into the skin; squalane itself contains no water and cannot hydrate on its own — it slows the loss of water that is already there. That is why a lotion generally beats an oil alone on genuinely dehydrated body skin, and why squalane oil works best either over damp skin or over a lotion. Neither is a treatment for a skin condition. Squalane is a comfort-and-softness ingredient, and the honest version of that claim is the one worth trusting.
The bottom line. If you want the most squalane-forward body formula you can buy, it is the Biossance Squalane + Caffeine Toning Body Cream — squalane sits second, right after water, and nothing else here comes close on that measure. If you want the lotion most people should actually buy, it is the fragrance-free Naturium Bio-Lipid Restoring Body Lotion: squalane is only mid-list, but it is the cheapest per ounce here, it comes in a bottle big enough to use generously, and it has no fragrance to react to. Those two answers are different on purpose, and we would rather tell you that than pretend one product wins on every axis.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best squalane body lotion?
It depends which question you are asking. For the most squalane-forward formula, the Biossance Squalane + Caffeine Toning Body Cream lists squalane as its second ingredient, ahead of every other oil in the product. For the best everyday buy, the fragrance-free Naturium Bio-Lipid Restoring Body Lotion is the lowest cost per ounce here and comes in a large bottle, though squalane sits mid-list rather than at the top.
Why is squalane so far down the ingredient list on most body lotions?
Because it is expensive relative to the bulk oils and butters that make up a body lotion, and because a small amount is enough to put the word on the label. US rules require ingredients above 1% to be listed in descending order of predominance, so an ingredient near the end of a long list is present at a low level. That does not make the lotion bad — it just means squalane is not what is doing most of the work.
Can you use squalane face oil on your body?
Yes, and it is often the cheaper route. Squalane is the same molecule whichever aisle it is sold in. Because you use much more product on the body than the face, a large-format 100% squalane bottle with a low cost per ounce is the sensible choice, applied to damp skin or layered over a plain lotion.
Is squalane body lotion safe for acne-prone skin?
Squalane itself is commonly rated 0 to 1 on the comedogenic scale, so the ingredient is a reasonable choice for skin that breaks out. The rest of the formula is what matters: a rich body butter, or a lotion with coconut oil high on the list, is a poorer fit for a back or chest that breaks out than a lighter, fragrance-free lotion. Patch-test anything new.
Does a squalane body lotion help with bumpy or rough skin?
It can make rough, dry skin feel softer and more comfortable, because that is what an emollient does. It is not a treatment for keratosis pilaris or any other skin condition, and we would not claim otherwise. If bumpy or rough skin persists or bothers you, a doctor or dermatologist can suggest options that actually target it.
Should I use a squalane body lotion or a squalane body oil?
A lotion contains water and humectants and is the better single product for genuinely dehydrated skin. An oil contains no water and works by slowing water loss, so it performs best over damp skin or over a lotion. Many people get the best result and the lowest cost by using a cheap fragrance-free lotion first and a few drops of 100% squalane over the top.
