The Best Squalane for Men
Ranked on the three things men actually ask of a skincare product: it must not smell of anything, it must not leave a shine, and there must be enough in the bottle to use below the neck.

The pick is Timeless 100% Pure Squalane: one ingredient, no fragrance, no shine once it has absorbed, and 60 ml in the bottle — which is the part that matters, because this is the rare skincare product you will also use on your jaw after shaving, on cracked hands in February and on shins that flake all winter. It costs very little per ounce, it replaces three or four things you might otherwise buy, and there is nothing in it to react to. If you would rather have a cleanser than an oil as your one new product, skip to The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser, second on this page.
Why squalane specifically, and why a page about men. Most grooming products aimed at men are sold on scent and on packaging, which is exactly backwards: added fragrance is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetics, and it is also the thing most likely to sting a face that has just been dragged over with a razor. Squalane in its pure form has no scent at all. It is a close relative of squalene, one of the lipids your own sebum already contains, which is why it absorbs without the tacky film heavier oils leave. And it is commonly rated 0 to 1 on the comedogenic scale, so it is one of the very few oils that is a sensible idea on skin that still breaks out.
So here is the criterion this page is ranked on, and it is different from every other buying guide we publish. Not purity, which our oils roundup already covers. Not the shortest ingredient list, which the sensitive-skin page covers. Here it is three things in order: is it unscented on the published list; does it leave skin matte rather than glossy once absorbed; and is there enough product in the pack to use it below the neck without rationing. A 15 ml bottle that only ever touches your face fails the third test however good the oil inside it is.
Four of the five picks below are fragrance-free on their published ingredient lists, which is unusually good for this category and is the main reason these five and not others. We say on every card which, rather than leaving you to read the back of the box. Two of them are cleansers, because for a lot of men the honest first upgrade is not adding a moisturiser — it is stopping the bar soap or the mint-and-menthol face wash that is making skin tight and flaky in the first place.
A word on the post-shave use, because it is the single best reason on this page to own a bottle of squalane. A blade removes the top layer of dead cells along with the hair, which is why aftershave with alcohol in it burns: you are putting a solvent on freshly abraded skin. Two drops of plain squalane pressed on while your face is still damp from rinsing does the opposite — it seals in the water that is already there and leaves no scent in a room. It is not a medicine and it will not fix razor bumps, which are an ingrown-hair problem that needs technique and sometimes a dermatologist, but as a replacement for a stinging splash it is a straight upgrade.
On shine, which is the thing most men are actually worried about when they refuse to use an oil. Squalane goes on looking like an oil and then stops looking like one, typically inside a minute, because it is a light hydrocarbon rather than a heavy triglyceride. The way to get a greasy forehead out of it is to use too much — four or five drops on a face rather than two — or to apply it to completely dry skin, where it sits on the surface with nothing to seal. Two drops, damp skin, pressed rather than rubbed. That is the whole method, and our absorption guide covers the timings if you want them.
What none of this will do. Squalane is an emollient, not an active: it does not clear acne, it does not fade a scar, it does nothing to a wrinkle, and it will not grow a beard or thicken hair. It makes the surface of skin softer, smoother and less prone to losing water, which in practice means a face that stops feeling tight by mid-afternoon and legs that stop flaking. If you want a product that changes skin rather than conditioning it, the two with real evidence behind them are a daily sunscreen and a retinoid, and squalane's most useful job in that routine is making the retinoid tolerable enough to keep using.

The Ordinary Squalane + Amino Acids Hydrating Lip Balm
8.9The only lip balm we found where squalane is genuinely the first ingredient rather than a name on the front — and it is also among the cheapest here.
- Purity
- Squalane 1st of 27 ingredients
- Source

- Size
- 0.5 fl oz (15 ml)
- Cost / oz
- $19.00/oz
- Best for
- Best squalane lip balm overall
What we like
- Squalane is 1st of 27 — no other squalane-branded lip balm we checked comes close
- No fragrance, parfum, flavor or essential oil on the published list
- Amino acids, betaine and sodium PCA add real humectants behind the emollient
- Cheap enough to keep one in every coat pocket
Keep in mind
- A squeeze tube rather than a stick, which some people find fiddly out of the house
- No tint and no shine — this is a treatment balm, not a cosmetic
- The amino-acid complex sounds more impressive than it behaves; the squalane does most of the work
- The 'elbows and cuticles' framing on the tube is marketing; 15 ml will not go far on a body
Skip it if you want color, gloss or a click-up stick. On ingredient quality per dollar, nothing else on this page beats it.

#ad · How we make money
Buy the Timeless if you want one product and no decisions. 60 ml of a single fragrance-free ingredient at a low cost per ounce, usable on your face, your jaw after shaving, your hands, your shins and the dry ends of your hair. The honest downsides: the packaging is plain, the brand is less familiar than The Ordinary or Biossance, and the dropper is a dropper rather than a pump. None of those change what is in the bottle, which is the same molecule the expensive bottles contain.
Buy The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser if your skin feels tight after washing. This is the pick for anyone currently using a bar of soap, a body wash, or a face wash built around menthol and a cooling sensation — all of which strip the surface lipids off skin and then leave it to recover on its own. A squalane balm melts on contact, takes off sunscreen, sweat and the day, and rinses without that squeaky feeling. 150 ml is a lot of cleanser for the money. It takes a day or two to get used to a balm texture if you have only ever used a foam, which is a genuine objection and the reason the CeraVe foam is also on this page.
Buy the Naturium Bio-Lipid Restoring Body Lotion for everything below the neck. 14 fl oz, fragrance-free, with safflower oil, shea butter, niacinamide and panthenol doing the work alongside the squalane — and the lowest cost per ounce of any body product we cover. This is the pick for shins, elbows, forearms and hands, and the honest caveat is on the card: squalane sits mid-list here, so you are buying a competent fragrance-free barrier lotion that contains squalane rather than a squalane product. For dry body skin that is the right trade, because 14 fl oz of a plain oil would be an absurd way to moisturise a pair of legs.
Buy the CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser if you want a foam and will not be talked out of it. It is fragrance-free, it carries three ceramides alongside the squalane, it is the cheapest per use of anything here, and it is sold in every drugstore in the country. Be clear about what it is, though: squalane sits ninth of thirty-three, behind the surfactant system, so this is a well-made gentle face wash that contains squalane rather than a squalane-first cleanser. It is also too light to take off a heavy sunscreen in one pass.
Buy The Ordinary lip balm if your lips crack in winter, which for anyone working outdoors they will. Squalane is first of twenty-seven on the list — genuinely first, not a name on the front — and there is no flavour, no tint, no shine and nothing in it designed to tingle. It comes in a squeeze tube rather than a stick, which is the main thing people dislike about it. At this price it is worth keeping one in a jacket pocket and one in the truck.
The two-minute routine, if you want to be told exactly what to do. Morning: wash with the cleanser, pat your face most of the way dry, press two drops of squalane in while it is still slightly damp, then sunscreen on top — sunscreen is always the last step and never mixed with anything. Evening: wash, two drops of squalane, lotion on anything below the neck that feels tight. That is it. Add a retinoid later if you want to actually change how your skin ages, introduce it two nights a week rather than daily, and use the squalane on top of it on the nights it makes you peel.
The bottom line. One bottle of Timeless squalane and one tube of The Ordinary cleanser is a complete, unscented, under-twenty-dollar routine that most men would see a real difference from inside a fortnight. Add the Naturium lotion if your legs or hands are the problem rather than your face, swap the balm cleanser for the CeraVe foam if you cannot get on with a balm, and keep the lip balm for winter. Nothing on this page smells of anything, and nothing on it leaves a shine if you use two drops instead of five.
Frequently asked questions
Is squalane good for men's skin?
Yes, and for a structural reason rather than a marketing one: squalane is a close relative of squalene, a lipid your own sebum already contains, so it absorbs without the heavy film other oils leave. It has no scent in its pure form, it is commonly rated 0 to 1 on the comedogenic scale so it suits skin that still breaks out, and the same bottle works on a face, a freshly shaved jaw, dry hands and flaking shins.
Can I use squalane oil after shaving?
Yes — it is one of the best uses for it. Shaving removes the top layer of dead cells along with the hair, which is why alcohol-based aftershave stings. Press two drops of plain squalane on while your face is still damp from rinsing and it seals in the water that is already there with no scent and no burn. It will not fix razor bumps, which are an ingrown-hair problem that needs better technique and sometimes a dermatologist.
Will squalane oil make my face look greasy?
Not if you use two drops on damp skin and press rather than rub. Squalane is a light hydrocarbon rather than a heavy plant oil, so it normally stops looking like an oil inside a minute. The two ways to end up shiny are using four or five drops, and applying it to completely dry skin where it has no water to seal in and simply sits on the surface.
What is the best squalane product for men?
Timeless 100% Pure Squalane, on the criteria that matter here: one fragrance-free ingredient, no shine once absorbed, and 60 ml in the bottle so you can use it on your face, your jaw after shaving and your body without rationing it. If you would rather add a cleanser than an oil, The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser is the pick — particularly if you are currently washing with soap or a menthol face wash.
Do men need a different skincare routine from women?
Not materially. Male skin is on average slightly thicker and oilier, and shaving is a genuine difference that argues for fragrance-free products and for sealing damp skin rather than splashing on alcohol. Beyond that, the things with real evidence behind them are the same for everyone: daily sunscreen, a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser or emollient that suits your skin, and a retinoid if you want to change how your skin ages.
Is squalane good for beard dryness and the skin underneath?
It is a reasonable, unscented alternative to a beard oil, which is usually a blend of heavier carrier oils plus fragrance. A couple of drops worked down to the skin softens the hair and conditions the skin underneath without a scent. What it will not do is make a beard grow or fill a patch — no topical oil does that, whatever the bottle says.
How many products do I actually need?
Two will cover most people: a gentle cleanser and a bottle of plain squalane, with sunscreen in the morning. Add a body lotion if your shins, elbows or hands are the real problem, and a lip balm for winter. Everything else on any shelf is optional, and a four-step routine you keep doing beats an eight-step routine you abandon.

Two drops, damp skin, pressed not rubbed
