Where Squalane Fits in Your Skincare Routine
Oils go last. Here's the simple rule for slotting squalane into your morning and evening routine — and why the order matters.
Skincare works thinnest-to-thickest: water-based products first, oils and creams last, because an oil can seal a water-based serum in but a serum can't push through an oil. Squalane is an oil, so it lives near the end of the routine.
That single rule answers most of the confusion. Below is the exact order, morning and night, and the two places squalane earns its spot.
The order, step by step
A standard routine, thinnest to thickest, looks like this:
- Cleanser (a squalane cleansing balm works here as a gentle first cleanse)
- Toner or essence, if you use one
- Water-based serums (hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C)
- Squalane oil — a few drops
- Moisturizer (or mix the squalane into it)
- Sunscreen (morning only, always last)
The two ways to use squalane
You can apply squalane as its own step, right before moisturizer, to seal in the water-based layers underneath. Or you can mix a drop or two into your moisturizer to boost its emollience — handy in winter.
On damp skin, squalane traps a little extra water against the surface, which is why applying it before your skin fully dries can feel more hydrating. It's lightweight and rated 0–1 for comedogenicity, so most skin types can use it morning and night.
Morning vs night
At night, squalane is a comfortable last step (or second-to-last under a heavier cream). In the morning, use it before sunscreen — never after — so your SPF sits on top and works as tested.
If mornings feel greasy, save the oil for night and keep the day routine to serum plus moisturizer plus SPF.
Frequently asked questions
Do you put squalane on before or after moisturizer?
Before, or mixed into it. Squalane is lightweight enough to go under a cream, or you can add a drop or two directly to your moisturizer. A heavy cream can go over squalane to lock everything in.
Can you use squalane every day?
Yes. Squalane is well tolerated and non-comedogenic (commonly rated 0–1), so most people use it morning and night. In the morning, apply it before sunscreen.
